Poetry on a Thursday with Bjørn Rasmussen

What is the secret of Lemvig? First there was Thøger Larsen and now - just over 100 years later - there is Bjørn Rasmussen. Two exceptional Danish poets from the same location.

Thøger Larsen has left this world long time ago, but Bjørn Rasmussen is still alive and cheerfully spirited. His poems are progressive, but in an uplifting and remarkable way. They are full of both pain and humor. Rasmussen will present his work on March 1st, 2018 at 20:00 as a part of the regular event Poetry on a Thursday. His reading will take place in the Prismesalen Hall in Musikteatret Holstebro.

Bjørn Rasmussen

Bjørn Rasmussen was born in 1983 and grew up in a village near Lemvig. He graduated from Danish Playwright School in Aarhus in 2007. He also attended the Danish Writers’ School in Copenhagen in 2009 - 2011.

His theatre debut happened in 2004 at Theater Katapult in Aarhus with the performance of his play Mosquito marches in a sweet blood. His first novel The skin is the elastic envelope that surrounds the entire body was published in 2011. The novel is a beginning of author's characteristic focus on the study regarding the human body, sexuality and identity. It's substance is also eminently autobiographical which is one of the main typical features of Rasmussen's work, even though he never gets extremely private. In 2013, he published a poetic novel Pynt, and in 2015 he released his first poem collection Ming.

All publications have been profoundly praised. The debut received six stars in Jyllands-Posten, five in Politiken and Rasmussen also obtained Montanas Literature Prize in 2011. In 2013, he received the State Art Foundation's work placement and KulturBornholm Literature Prize in 2014.

Other components

In addition to Bjørn Rasmussen, another guest performance will be presented in March - dance performance by the superb Black Box Dance Company. Furthermore, people will have the opportunity to enjoy live music and famous person from Holstebro will read some of his/hers favorite poetry. There will also be a traditional reading from the work of Persian 1200's poet Omar Khajjam's poetry collection and of course, the poem of the month. Lecturer Gerd Schmidt Nielsen from Holstebro Gymnasium and HF will present his lyrical essay and during the break, Arnold Busck Bookstore in Holstebro will sell books for cheap prizes.

Poetry on a Thursday is a regular evening event in Holstebro which gives people the opportunity of meeting contemporary Danish poets. These evenings, at which the invited poet reads his or her own poems, happen three times in the spring - February, March and April - and three times in the autumn - September, October and November - on the first Thursday of the month in question.

This event involves other activities such as musical interludes by Odin Teatret's House Orchestra as well as other musicians and orchestras, the reading of the winning poem from the Poem of the Month competition, readings from The Rubâijât by Omar Khajjâm in Farsi and other languages, the reading of a favourite poem by a well-known Holstebro personality, an essay about the poet of the evening, the sale of books of poetry and, last but not least, the serving of the Wine of the Month to the audience.

Poetry on a Thursday usually takes place at the newly restored at Knudsen's theatre on Holstebro's central pedestrian precinct. It is organised by Odin Teatret in collaboration with Holstebro Gymnasium and HF (High School), Holstebro Bibliotek (library), Holstebro Musikteatret, Arnold Busck bookshop, Holstebro Education Centre and Holstebro Kunstmuseum (Museum of Art). It enjoys the support of the Municipality of Holstebro and the Danish Arts Council and Literature Centre.

A glass of wine is included in the ticket price.
